Overview
We conceived and built BMW Next Car Intelligence, a concept that rethinks the upgrade journey from the ground up. Not a configurator. Not a sales tool. A system that listens, reflects, and connects the right car to the right person at the right moment in their life.
Few Words
I grew up in and around bimma culture, and BMW has shaped how I think about design, engineering and making something people feel. Four years ago I founded Format-3 with one ambition: to one day give BMW the digital partner the brand deserves. Rather than wait to be invited to pitch, we ran a full proof of concept.

The Thinking
The upgrade moment
was being wasted
BMW's most loyal customers, M car owners, weren't leaving the brand because they'd fallen out of love with it. They were leaving because their lives had moved on and nothing in the experience acknowledged that. A growing family, a move out of the city, a shift in how they worked.
The car no longer fit the life, but nobody was asking the right questions. The brief wasn't to design a better configurator. It was to design a better conversation. We drove the thinking from big bet three in our book, From Metal To Relationship, which unpacked dealership intelligence.

Understanding the human
The answers were already in the room
We spent time at BMW dealership around the UK speaking to the people who have that conversation every day: sales specialists, service advisors, floor managers. What we found was consistent: the best interactions happened when a specialist understood the customer's life context before they talked about cars. The worst happened when they didn't.
The gap between what customers arrived knowing and what specialists needed to know was the problem. The intelligence layer was the answer.

Building the intelligence
A system that listens before it speaks
We designed a six-stage journey (Recognise, Reflect, Reframe, Recommend, Refine, Connect) built around the customer's life, not the vehicle catalogue. Life-change cards, weighted sliders, a personalised aspect scoring system, and a theatre mode that surfaces what actually matters to each individual user, in the right order, for the right reasons.
The same data that guides the customer briefs the specialist. Confidence scores, conversation guides, stock alerts, suggested demos. Two experiences. One intelligence layer underneath both.

Designing the experience
Every decision earned its place
Dark, cinematic, editorial. Full-bleed imagery generated through a controlled AI pipeline built in Figma Weave. The visual language was built to feel closer to the feeling BMW delivered through their products rather than a car-buying tool, because the moment deserved that register.
Copy was treated as a design element throughout. Every card, every slider label, every transition was written to feel like a person talking, not a system processing. The interface earns trust before a single human is involved.

Making it real
The concept needed to exist
in more than one form
The digital experience was designed in full fidelity. The AI asset pipeline was built and tested. A physical book, From Metal To Relationship, was conceived as the intellectual artefact behind the concept, giving the thinking a form that could be held, shared, and kept.
A showreel distils the full system into two minutes. Together they make the argument that this isn't a prototype. It's a direction.

Execution
Built the way the product thinks:
lean, intelligent, intentional
The entire concept was designed and produced by Format-3. Strategy, UX, UI, copy, AI asset direction, motion, and physical production. Figma for design and prototyping, Figma Weave for consistent AI-generated imagery, a controlled scoring system built in logic and mapped to a full aspect library across three car paths.
No legacy thinking. No inherited assumptions. Built from first principles around a single question: what does this person's life actually need right now?
Outcome
A new model for how automotive
brands think about loyalty
BMW Next Move Intelligence demonstrates that the upgrade journey doesn't have to start with a car. It can start with a conversation, one that's already been shaped by intelligence before a specialist meets the customer.
The concept reframes what a dealership visit means. What a recommendation feels like. What it means to arrive somewhere already understood. That shift, from transaction to relationship, is the outcome. Everything else is proof of it.
